Tips For A "Greener" Move

by Virgil Hopkins

While there are many new green transportation options emerging, household moving services are one area where consumers may be unsure of how to be sustainable. There are a few things that you can do to make your move more eco-friendly, from the equipment you use to the way you transport your items. Here are some tips for a greener move.

Choose Your Vehicle Carefully

There are a few things that you can do to reduce the carbon emissions of your moving vehicle. First, choose a moving truck that runs on gasoline for lower emissions than their diesel counterparts. It can also help to rent your truck from a local moving company; this will save on the added gas mileage of driving to your location. Finally, rent a truck that's only as big as you need. If you are unsure how big of a truck you will use, you might want to opt for a smaller truck. There are various services for shipping your extra items to your new location. For instance, some moving companies offer a truck sharing program for smaller loads.

Choose Your Moving Supplies Carefully

Another thing that you can do to cut down on waste is to rent the right moving supplies. For instance, instead of using throw-away cardboard boxes to pack your items, you could rent some reusable plastic containers for your supplies. Not only do these reduce your waste, but they can be thicker and more durable than cardboard boxes. You can also avoid wasting disposable tape by using bungee cords to hold your items in place. Instead of using packing peanuts to cushion your items, consider wrapping them in a moving blanket instead.

Reduce Your Waste

Finally, you may be willing to part with a lot of things before your big move, so consider how you can dispose of them sustainably. Donate what you can to charities and schools. Sort your recyclable items carefully; you may have to contact a few recycling facilities to take unusual items such as plastic bags and scrap metal.  Check your local electronics stores to see if they can recycle your old electronics and batteries for you.

These tips can help you save resources, and they may also save you a buck or two. If you are interested in reducing your carbon footprint, be sure to use these tips and choose a moving company that is committed to sustainability.
